As regular Irongeek readers know, I’ve covered
wardriving (the act of physically moving around in meatspace looking for WiFi access point) before. In this video, I want to cover another tool for wardriving: WiFiFoFum for the Windows Mobile platform. I don’t always have a laptop with me, but I almost always have my HTC Touch Pro cell phone on me. While WiFiFoFum on a phone has a few disadvantages:
1. It’s an active scanner, not passive like Kismet. No RFMon mode means you won’t see cloaked SSIDs. Luckily most people don’t cloak their SSIDs since it adds very little to security, and takes away much from troubleshooting convenience and the ability to find out who in your area is on the same channel as you.
2. It lacks range and the ability to attach an external antenna, at least without extensive modding.
It makes up for these disadvantages with some serious advantages, that basically come down to convenience:
1. It’s always with you.
2. It takes less power, so you can run it from a little car adapter instead of a large inverter needed for most laptops.
3. It fits in your pocket so you can go warstrolling with Paul, Larry and John.
4. Many phones have a GPS built in, so less tangling cables.
Now, let’s see WiFiFoFum strut its stuff.
