Abstract: Have you ever wanted to play in a Capture the Flag competition but either don’t think you’re good enough or aren’t sure where to start? Well, come learn where to start and why you don’t have to be a rockstar hacker to enjoy the world of competitive hacking. It’s easy to get involved in these competitions and once you are shown a few of the problems you might just be surprised at how achievable some of these contests are.

This talk will present a history of CTF competitions along with some of the more interesting challenges developed along the way. To keep things fun, there will be several interactive spot-the-bug slides with prizes awarded to those who answer quickest. Finally, the story of one CTF team will be presented showing their successes and failures. The main goal of this presentation is to show how much there is to be learned from these competitions and how much fun it can be to participate.

Author Bio: Though there have been other CTF talks this is the first time this talk will be presented. Steven Vittitoe (@bool101) started the Samurai CTF team and has participated and organized CTF competitions for 6 years. He currently works for Endgame Inc. doing security related research.
