Steve’s keynote will focus on achieving successful security outcomes using atypical-yet-practical technical techniques and embracing atypical approaches for thinking about and addressing security risks. Booby traps, canaries, and hibernating services? Yes. Allowing shared accounts and eliminating privileged accounts? Perhaps. Threat modeling? Absolutely. You don’t need magic bullets, but you need to challenge the status quo, think critically, and break out of your comfort zone. Challenge accepted...? Steve Werby is the enterprise security architect for an unnamed Fortune 500 auto retailer headquartered in Virginia, an independent security researcher, and the founder of Befriend, a boutique security consultancy. He has previously served in a range of security roles in the private and public sector, including CISO for several large organizations. He’s presented at such intergalactic conferences as DerbyCon, SOURCE, Hack3rCon, SecTor, ShmooCon, PasswordsCon, and BSidesLV. Steve loathes the CIA triad, magic bullet technologies, FUD, and the status quo. He savors incremental gains, efficacy, and business enablement. And he hasn’t signed his name the same way twice since 2009, because doing so increases his risk, offers him no reward, and is banal. Steve was a [winning!] co-defendant in a case appealed to the US Supreme Court, his mother’s maiden name is Donkey Kong Bumper Boat, and he is honored and excited to have the opportunity to speak to you at Converge.
